Stuart draws on his legal, business and leadership experiences to benefit his clients at Lowis & Gellen. Over the course of his 30 plus year professional career, Stuart has handled all phases of civil litigation, including trial, appeal, negotiation and mediation on behalf of insured and self-insured healthcare institutions and professionals, product manufacturers and clients from myriad other industries. He has successfully tried multiple cases to verdict, including many with multimillion dollar exposure, and secured favorable settlements when that was the best course of action for his clients. Stuart recognizes the importance of effectively communicating with his clients to ensure they are well informed so that sound decisions can be made to achieve success as defined by the client.
Before joining Lowis & Gellen, Stuart served as the Vice President of Healthcare Claims for a large national insurance carrier. In this role, Stuart oversaw all business, financial, technical, and personnel decisions for an 80 person organization handling professional liability claims made against hospitals, physicians, allied facilities, pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers, long term care institutions, dentists, nurses and other allied healthcare providers. Overseeing a nation-wide claim inventory involving this expansive client portfolio, Stuart developed an appreciation for broad exposure trends as well as insight into the impact specific jurisdictional factors can have on a case. He utilizes that unique perspective as he works with his clients at Lowis & Gellen.
In addition to applying his litigation experience to provide tactical guidance on high severity/complex claims, Stuart developed his team’s performance goals, ensured strategic alignment across all levels of the organization and provided ongoing feedback to team members to both secure desired results and support career development. Stuart helped establish “best practices” for his team, focusing on early case assessment, proactive litigation management and targeted resolution. He also served as the Claim organization lead working with other disciplines on initiatives designed to achieve enterprise goals and help refine underwriting appetite, actuarial projections and risk management initiatives.
Stuart received his Bachelor’s degree from DePauw University and his Law Degree from Duke University. Stuart also has received his certification as a mediator through Northwestern University
