Mr. Berman’s practice focuses on medical malpractice, long term care defense, and the formation of captive insurance companies. He defends hospitals, medical centers, nursing homes, physician groups, individual physicians and nurses in medical malpractice and long term care cases. He has particular expertise in cases involving complex and catastrophic losses, products liability and compliance issues.

Mr. Berman also consults and advises hospitals and other health care facilities on restructuring risk management processes and compliance issues.

Mr. Berman is national supervising counsel for two national insurance collectives and is vice-president of captive “incubator” Midwest Consultants, where he works with pending and existing projects, assisting doctors and hospitals in forming captive insurance companies, risk retention groups (RRGs), and risk purchasing groups (RPGs).

Professional Activities

In addition to his practice as a lawyer, Mr. Berman frequently speaks to medical and legal professionals regarding topics related to health care litigation. He has authored or co-authored multiple publications and has authored, edited, presented and/or co-presented multiple lectures covering a range of topics in medical malpractice.

Education and Professional Associations

Mr. Berman was raised in Chicago and is a 1998 graduate of Chicago-Kent College of Law. He received his undergraduate education at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. He was admitted to the state and federal bar in 1998.

Mr. Berman is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association.

In addition to his legal work, Mr. Berman also sits on the boards of two non-profit organizations, Preservation Chicago and the Uptown Chicago Commission.
